As part of the Central Bank of Egypt’s (CBE) ongoing commitment to upgrading the national payments infrastructure in line with international best practices, the banking sector in Egypt has officially adopted the global ISO 20022 standard for SWIFT messaging in interbank financial transfers, effective 21 June 2026.

This landmark development represents a significant milestone in Egypt’s digital transformation strategy for the financial sector, aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency, and interoperability across banking systems.

CBE Governor: A Strategic Step Toward Financial Modernization

H.E. Mr. Hassan Abdalla, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, stated that the adoption of ISO 20022 reflects the CBE’s continued efforts to modernize the payments ecosystem and improve the efficiency of the Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system between banks.

He added that this transition will support the development of modern financial services such as open banking and advanced data analytics, while enabling banks and financial institutions to design and launch more innovative financial products aligned with global standards.

What is ISO 20022?

ISO 20022 is recognized as the world’s most advanced and unified global standard for financial messaging. It enhances payment systems through:

  • Faster and more efficient interbank settlement processes via RTGS systems
  • Improved payment data quality through richer and more structured information
  • Enhanced cross-border payment experience through Straight-Through Processing (STP)
  • Reduced manual intervention, resulting in faster transaction execution and higher operational efficiency

Strengthening Compliance and Financial Security

The standard also significantly enhances banks’ ability to automatically screen transactions in line with local and international Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) requirements.

This improvement strengthens regulatory compliance, increases transparency, and supports smoother integration with regional and international payment platforms.

A Milestone for Egypt’s Digital Financial Infrastructure

The Central Bank of Egypt confirmed that the RTGS system has been upgraded to fully comply with the ISO 20022 standard, positioning Egypt among the leading countries in modern payment system infrastructure.

This step reinforces the RTGS system as a cornerstone of Egypt’s digital financial ecosystem and highlights the country’s continued progress toward a more advanced, efficient, and globally integrated banking sector.
