– The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Cairo commemorated the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence on Monday, 17 August 2026, bringing together the Indonesian community in Egypt as well as Egyptian friends and members of communities with a strong interest in Indonesia.
The celebration began with a flag-raising ceremony at the Embassy, led by H.E. Kuncoro Waseso, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Arab Republic of Egypt. Embassy officials and staff, students and teachers of the Indonesian School in Cairo, Indonesian students, professionals, businesspeople and members of the wider Indonesian community in Egypt attended the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, representative of the Presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt visited the Embassy to convey the congratulations of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to the Government and people of Indonesia on the occasion of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence. The presidential gesture reflected the close and longstanding friendship between Indonesia and Egypt and the strong relations between the two countries.
Adding a special dimension to this year’s celebration was the participation of Egyptian citizens and members of Indonesia-loving communities in Egypt. Their presence reflected the warm people-to-people relations that have long connected Indonesia and Egypt, extending beyond official diplomatic relations to friendship and mutual appreciation between the two peoples.
The Indonesian national flag, Merah Putih, was raised by 19 members of the Embassy’s flag-hoisting team to the accompaniment of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya. The ceremony also paid tribute to those who contributed to Indonesia’s struggle for independence.
Following the formal ceremony, the Embassy grounds turned into a lively celebration featuring traditional Indonesian Independence Day games. Indonesian and Egyptian participants had the opportunity to experience popular activities such as tug-of-war, sack races and the traditional cracker (kerupuk) eating competition.
The festive atmosphere, filled with laughter and enthusiastic support from participants and spectators, offered Egyptian guests a glimpse into the unique way Indonesians celebrate their Independence Day — combining national pride with community gathering, traditional games and a strong sense of togetherness.
The celebration was part of a series of activities organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo to mark the 81st Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence, including sports competitions and various community activities involving Indonesians from different backgrounds across Egypt.
The participation of Egyptian friends in the celebration also highlighted the growing cultural and social interaction between the two countries. Indonesia and Egypt enjoy longstanding relations that continue to develop through education, culture and direct engagement between their peoples.
Through such celebrations, the Embassy of Indonesia in Cairo seeks to share the spirit, traditions and values of Indonesia with both the Indonesian community and Egyptian society, while further strengthening friendship and people-to-people ties between Indonesia and Egypt.
